Assignment 5: Technopreneurship Business

Handling and managing a business is not simple task to do, it requires hard work, self-confidence and courage to overcome the challenges and obstacle that he/she may face as the business grows. This subject “TECHNOPRENUERSHIP 1” has a lot of learning that we will absorb and train us in order for us to grow as a good technoprenuer. Technopreneur is an entrepreneur who is technology savvy, creative, innovative, dynamic, dares to be different and take the unexplored path, and very passionate about their work. They take challenges and strive to lead their life with greater success. They don't fear to fail. They take failure as a learning experience, a stimulator to look things differently and stride for next challenge. Technoprenuers continuously go through an organic process of continual improvement and always try to redefine the dynamic digital economy.
Technopreneurship is not a product but a process of synthesis in engineering the future of a person, an organization, a nation and the world. In a digital, knowledge based society, strategic directions or decision-making processes will be demanding and complex. This requires tertiary level and professional development programs and training to produce strategic thinkers who will have the skills to succeed in a dynamically changing global environment. Traditional educational programs, however, lack the methodology to transform today's students into creative, innovative, visionary global leaders who understand the importance of technopreneurship.

Assignment 4: Commencement Address of Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs again? What’s new? This was the first thing that enters my mind when our facilitator gave us this assignment. As I read the commencement address of Steve Jobs, it was a different story, a story of failure, success and full of life. I found him so much interesting. Why? Because I see and appreciate how Steve Jobs survive from his challenges, obstacles, and adversity in his career as a public figure and his personal life. I did realized that successful people also faces a big bang! in their career. I mean, people who are in the highest pick of their career may also fall. He was able to find an opportunity in time of his adversity and it generates new and unique ideas. The whole message was of his commencement address was great. It inspired me in my studies and finding what I really love to do. There were 3 stories that he mentioned. The first was about connecting the dots, second were about love and loss and the last was death.
“CONNECTING THE DOTS”
As I remember, our facilitator gave as an exercise wherein the main goal was to connect 9 dots in 4 strokes without lifting the pen. Few of us got the idea, but most of us didn’t figure it out. The main thought of that exercise is to think outside the box. If we based it on the dots we really cannot connect it if we focused inside but when we think outside the box we can connect it.
Steve Job’s life wasn’t very much fortunate like most of successful people have. Aside from being a dropped out student, his parents was also not a college graduate. Even though he had been given the chances to finish a degree in an expensive university, he decided to dropped out because he couldn’t see the value in it and he have no idea how college would help him on what he really wanted to do to his life.
Some people would think that Steve Jobs really messed up during these days. But it gave him opportunities to find and do what he loves. From that day that he decided to dropped his subjects, He have the chance to took those subjects that made him interesting and fascinating. Despite of those consequences for those decisions, it made him happy living in a simple life doing what he love, and it turned out later on to be priceless because of his achievements. He build Apple Company and became a big tower in the technopreneurship industry. Maybe if Steve Jobs was not a dropped out student there would be no modern computers with excellent interface and functionality (Mac).
It is impossible to connect the dots looking forward not unless we realized that those decisions that we made by now can be the key that will mold on who we are in the future. We should trust our decisions if we want to be somebody in the future.

“LOVE AND LOSS”
Finding what we love will lead us to success. If we love on what we are doing we will do our best to achieve it and become more inspired despite of the challenges that we may encounter. Loss generates new opportunity for a new wonderful chapter of our life. It seems so hard when we loss but always remember that winners never quit! If you want reach success, never quit on finding what you love and loving what you are doing. When Steve Job got fired from his own company, he didn’t give up on doing what he loves and on what makes him happy. But instead he decided to start over. “Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me”. It was the best thing ever happened to him because of less responsibility from being a successful to beginner and the freedom.
If we haven’t found what we love, don’t settle and keep looking until you find it because it is where you can do great achievements. And that’s the only time wherein you can still say “yes” despite of all the failures and hardships that you encounter along the way. No matter how high you fall you are always willing to accept the challenge.
“DEATH”
Everybody is afraid to death even how religious and devoted you are, you still don’t want to die to be in heaven. We all know that all of us will surely face death because it is part of receiving the gift of life from God. We only borrowed the life that we had from him, so let’s make the best in it.
“If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” this quote motivates Steve Job to do what he loves. Knowing that we will be dead soon is a driving factor that motivates us to follow our heart in everything that we do. If I will live each day as if it was my last, I would choose to do the things that I love and do my very best for it. Finding our life’s purpose on earth through the will of heart makes us happy in every aspect of our life. Cherish every moment of our life because when we die all of our failures and hardships fades away leaving only what is truly important. The achievement of following our heart’s will, will bring to success and strengthen us as time goes by.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. Give the best in the doing the things that you love. It’s better to do what you really love than doing nothing at all because of fear that you may have something to lose.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Our heart is the core of our personality, it guides us in all aspect of your life. We know that we will die soon, follow what your heart says. Don’t live in the footprints of someone else’s life because you’ll never able to follow what really makes you happy. It’s hard to push yourself in doing the things that you don’t love because every day of your life you will notice that there is always a missing piece in the picture of who you are.
“Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.”
Stay hungry for more learning to come, for more experiences that will strengthen our foundation, for more challenge to accept and for more opportunity to come. Don’t be afraid to be criticized follow our will and follow our heart.

I was wrong when I thought that success in life are always has more to do with education, great connections, being intelligent and genius, and learning from those with more experience. Why I was wrong? I just realized that these things alone are not enough to support the factors needed to achieve success especially if you are a business minded person. It requires more than just intelligence to be successful, success is more dependent on one’s ability to create options and alternatives in life. Some call it diskarte or the skill to be able to play one’s cards right no matter how bad the cards one was dealt with. I remember a guy named Rhasty a friend of mine who told me about his experiences. He told me that success has much to do with diskarte and hardwork , unfortunately he didn’t able to finish his studies because of poverty. But the best thing that he told me about his experiences is that despite of the fact that he was not able to pursue a college degree, he was able to achieve SUCCESS (Financially). He has a business of selling dried fish, believe it or not he is gaining Php120, 000.00 up every month because of this, he was able to support financially the studies of his siblings and now most of them are degree holders. I was really amazed about what I heard and inspired.Whether you are a technopreneur or entrepreneur it is necessary that we have the guts specifically acquiring the personal traits needed to reach our goals
Based In my thoughts a good technopreneur should posses these characteristics to achieve SUCCESS. These characteristics are:
• Innovative & Opportunistic
• Willingness to take risk
• Initiative
• Self reliance
• Perseverance (keep trying to achieve something)
• Need to achieve
• Self confidence

• Leadership

• Competitiveness

• Good physical health

• Creative

• High level of energy
• Versatility

When we say personal traits, what are the things that will come first in our mind? We may refer to our character, attitude, physical appearance, social interactions, skills, intellects, and etc.
Personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. In addition to this, personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life. In other words, this means that personality traits are the distinguishing characteristics or components that make us.
Personality traits are the unique set of characteristics and qualities that only each of us possess. While a lot of people might have similar personality traits, each person combines these traits in a different way, to create one unique, irreplaceable collection of traits that make up their individual personality.
The most basic important personal traits that a technopreneur should acquired to achieve SUCCESS are IQ, EQ, and AQ. These three quotients have a big impact in all personal aspects of a technopreneur because each of these collaborates to support the needs and necessity that he/she will encounter in running the business. SUCCESS = IQ+EQ+AQ, meaning intelligence quotient alone is not sufficient neither emotional quotient or adversity quotient alone is not enough. These personal traits share an important role in building a successful technopreneur.

What is an Intelligence Quotient (IQ)???

Based on my own understanding IQ is measured through a test wherein the results will reflect how clever or genius we are. It describes how do we think logically, how do we solve analytical problems and etc. Hmmmm! Is that correct?…. Hehehe!
As I remember, I took an IQ test when I tried to study in seminary. Luckily, I passed the test but unfortunately I failed on the interview of the priest. huhuhu!
To be more exact I read some articles last night regarding these Quotients.

To understand IQ (Intelligence Quotient), you should first have an idea about what intelligence is - read various definitions.
IQ scores reflect general capacity for performing intellectual tasks, such as solving verbal and mathematical problems.
The average IQ score is 100. The standard deviation of IQ scores is 15. So, this means:
• 50% of people have IQ scores between 90 and 110
• 2.5% of people are very superior in intelligence (over 130)
• 2.5% of people are mentally deficient / impaired / retarded (under 70)
• 0.5% of people are near genius or genius (over 140)

IQ Scores & Ratings
What is a good IQ score? What is a high IQ score? What is a low IQ score? These are common questions, particularly after someone finds out their score from an IQ test.
Lewis Terman (1916) developed the original notion of IQ and proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:
• Over 140 - Genius or near genius
• 120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence
• 110 - 119 - Superior intelligence
• 90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence
• 80 - 89 - Dullness
• 70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency
• Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness
Normal Distribution & IQ Scores
The properties of the normal distribution apply to IQ scores:
• 50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110
• 70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115
• 95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130
• 99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

Low IQ & Mental Retardation
5% of people have an IQ under 70 and this is generally considered as the benchmark for "mental retardation", a condition of limited mental ability in that it produces difficulty in adapting to the demands of life.
Severity of mental retardation can be broken into 4 levels:
• 50-70 - Mild mental retardation (85%)
• 35-50 - Moderate mental retardation (10%)
• 20-35 - Severe mental retardation (4%)
• IQ < 20 - Profound mental retardation (1%)
High IQ & Genius IQ
Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400). Here's a rough guide:
• 115-124 - Above average (e.g., university students)
• 125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students)
• 135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals)
• 145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors)
• 155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners)
• 165-179 - High genius
• 180-200 - Highest genius
• >200 - "Unmeasurable genius"
More notes on High IQ and Genius IQ:
• Einstein was considered to "only" have an IQ of about 160.
• Mensa is a society for people with high IQ, in the top 2% (1 in 50).
• In 1926, psychologist Catherine Morris Cox published a study "of the most eminent men and women" who had lived between 1450 and 1850 to estimate what their IQs might have been.
• Go to Estimated IQs of the Greatest Geniuses.

I took an Intelligence quotient test awhile ago in the internet and there are a total of 38 items in all. I got a general IQ score of 92 wherein the cognitive designation is Average. As I observed those question are based more on logical thinking. Some of those questions are quite difficult and confusing , those were answerable by a true or false within 13 seconds.

What is an Emotional Quotient (IQ)???

Last, last week we had an Emotional Quotient test there were 32 questions. Those question were answerable by a letter A or B. There is a total of 50 points all in all. In each statement or questions there is a corresponding point in every decision or reactions that you would choose. Fortunately I got 49 points. Of course I am so happy because I have reached the very technopreneur level. Hehehe Laughing Laughing Laughing “ naa pa d ay koy puruhan nga madato!”
by the way, what is this emotional quotient is all about?
-Emotional Quotient -EQ actually stands for Emotional Intelligence Quotient. Much like an intelligence quotient, or IQ, an EQ is said to be a measure of a person’s emotional intelligence. However, there is much debate surrounding the legitimacy of a definition of emotional intelligence quotient, primarily because there is no standard against which it can be measured.
What is the Aspect of Emotional Quotient?
-Self-Awareness
-Control over Impulses
-Sociability

Emotional Intelligence, also known as Emotional Quotient or EQ, is all the buzz right now. EQ is the ability we have to use, communicate, recognize, remember, learn from and manage our relationships with other people. It is, in effect, the skills we've developed for building our social capital with those we wish to network with.
Some people just seem to have a knack for interacting or networking with other people. They have a high EQ. On the other hand, for some people networking is a very uncomfortable process. The higher one's EQ, the more natural it seems for an individual to network. I believe that EQ can be developed, whereas IQ is generally static and not easily improved. This means that you can actually improve your EQ by understanding and applying some important concepts to your networking practices

What is an Adversity Quotient (IQ)???

When we hear the word adverse the first thing that enters in my mind is the difficulty,
challenges, failures, and hardships that we encountered.A life without obstacles is as good as dead.
Whether they are everyday problems or crisis situations, how we handle them will
determine how good we are as a leader or as a boss of our company. The weak leaders
crumble when the odds stack up and surrender even before any
attempt to overcome the obstacles. The great and successful
leaders on the other hand see adversity as a challenge and an opportunity to grow. Against
all odds, they rise above the difficulties and land up scaling
greater heights than before. They do not merely survive the
adversity, they thrive. Leaders should continually conquer
adversity and, amid the chaos, look out for new opportunities to
undertake and excel in.

Why it is important for technopreneurs to develop these personal traits?

It is important for a technopreneurs or the bosses of the company to develop these personal traits because each of these traits collaborates for the success in reaching the goal and purpose of the business. We all know that venturing in a business is a risky and full of obstacles wherein it may result to success or failure. It is a risk basically because it is our money that we are investing for. A leader should necessarily posses those traits in order to have the INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT that would create brilliant, creative, and productive ideas, an EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT that will generate a harmonious atmosphere within the hive and to the customers that they serve for, and lastly, the ADVERSITY QUOTIENT that will strengthen the foundation of the company so that during the time of obstacles they would face it as a challenge to overcome and as a opportunity to grow.

Wew! Chill! Sad Sad Sad

Assignment 1: Pirates of the Silicon Valley

"PIRATES OF THE SILICON VALLEY"

It's nice to know the history of success and failure of the two giants in the Technopreneurship industry, Mr. Steve Jobs the owner of Apple computers and the wealthiest guy and the owner of the Microsoft Company, Mr. Bill Gates. Both of them came out from nothing but they are able to dominate in the fields of technopreneurship. Through their unique ideas and a work of arts they build a legacy that will be written in history of business and fame. They have the vision and passion that even other big companies like IBM don't have. It's like finding opportunities during the time of crisis. It’s our mindset that molds us on what we want to be in the future. Look! Mr. Bill Gates is just a drop-out student but he is able to generate a business and made it to the top of his competitors. Even though Gates and Jobs were financially insufficient during those days but they are able to utilize the resources that they have and create strategies to improve their craft. They face problems not as a hindrance to their success but as a challenge and a chance for new opportunity to be the best of all the best. We can also be like them not by following their footsteps but in our own ways. This subject Technopreneurship could be an opportunity for us to be a successful technopreneur. Like what our facilitator said that “think of a business and put it into action” by using our skills and intellect we could be like them. I know that putting up a business is not easy as 1, 2, 3… it’s a risky decision but the most important is that you know how to stand-up from difficulty and hardship. Who knows! May be one of us could be the next Bill Gates someday… think of this guys! Nothing is instant in this world except noodles… Even these two giants start from a nowhere and end up to a success.
1. What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?

SUCCESS!! Smile Smile Smile

1. Ability of inventing new ideas

The first factor that contributed to the success of Steve Jobs is his ability of inventing new ideas. Doing his passion in technology is a big factor to his success without this, modern computers would not be developed. It was the starting point of his success wherein his assets or resources is his cleverness towards developing unique inventions.

2. Good conversant

Steve Jobs was able to convince his investors and customers to embrace his new invention. He knows how to handle business transaction with big business companies through his knowledge of his own art. He communicate well and manage people in a big business deals. Through his words he corresponds to the needs of his investors.

3. Self-confidence
His self-confidence plays a big role in his career because through this he shows to the world how competent his invention is. He was not ashamed on what will others will comment on his invention. It is one of the driving factor on how did he face the challenges of his company, Apple. It also is also the big reason why he convinced his investors to adopt his invention even though during that time IBM most successful company and his biggest opponent.

4. Artistic mind
His work of art prevails the uniqueness of his invention. Artistic thinking shows the big difference between IBM computers and Apple computers. He markets his product as an evolution of the existing product. Apple computers have more features than IBM computers and it gives an idea to the customers that it is now the trend of computers.
artistic designs manipulates everything, like what he said in an article in 1000advices.com "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

6. Start small, think Big
He doesn’t think of what he can’t do for now, this were he started, from a scrap computers (wooden casing) into modern computers. Steve takes to manage simple things improve his invention and then proceed to more complicated advancements. That’s what he is now, a goliath in computer industry.

FAILURE!!!scratch scratch scratch

1. Greed
Factor that affects the breakdown of Steve Job is that he is unable to control his greed towards power and success. Being at the toughest competitor in computer technology industry during those time is a great achievement to his company. He was not satisfied with his employee’s effort most of them sacrifices sleepless nights just to come up with new design and features of his apple computers. As I remember, there one scene in the movie that his employee lost control of his patience on him and drag him on the wall. If he really wants to be always on the top, he should know how to handle people and recognize their efforts.

2. Unprofessional Conduct
With regards to his attitude to his employees, it not right to be abusive to his power as a boss of the company. He is abusive in the sense that he was not mindful of his actions and words that he throws and take note that no one has the right to degrade our rights and honor. To be on the top, it’s not only required that you/we have the intelligence, and creative minds, but also a good moral and attitude primarily because you/we deal with people. A good leader is a professionally competitive.

3. Lack of managerial Control
As leader of giant company like apple he should know how to handle his people. At first, he has the control of his company that made it to the top against IBM computers but as the company expands and improves he was out of control. One reason why he loses control is more on wrong decision making. He divides his company into two camps, one on the old apple computer camp and the other the new Macintosh development camp. In effect, the company lost their vision for success and it also is the reason why his friend “Waz” withdraws to his company.

4. Mistrust
For me, trusting and approving an alliance to Bill Gates is the weakest decision he ever made on his career. He already knew that Mr. Gates is one of his competitors although during that time, Microsoft is a just a piece of junk compared to Apple. He gave his enemy an opportunity to outrun him he didn’t think that Mr. Gates may betrayed him. By that time, Mr. Gates was able to improve his craft and manage to be on top against Apple computers. Mr. Gates is much wiser than Mr. Steve Jobs!

2. How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?

Hmmmm… me as a technopreneur? First, let me define what technopreneur really is all about. Technopreneur are entrepreneurs who used “technology” as their driven factor in transforming resources into goods and services, creating an environment conducive to industrial growth”… “A person who undertakes to organize, manage and assume risks of business”. It is a risky decision on putting up a business especially in financial aspect because we don’t know what would be the outcome of our investment, if it will be successful or will result into bankruptcy. Well as an IT student, I’m aware and knowledgable on the use of technology. If we talk about skills on technology, I can offer a good fight but Technopreneurship is not more on skills, there are lots of factors that a great technopreneur like Mr. Bill Gates and Mr. Steve Jobs have.
Now that we are on the Information age, it is an advantage for us to use the possible technology that we have. Note that majority of the people around the globe uses computers, if we market our product and services through internet we can get customers anywhere around the globe. A good example of this is e-bay, they are dependent on technology and utilizes everything that technology can do for them.
Back to the question “How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?” as a technopreneur someday, I can see that I have the possibilities to be a successful technopreneur. Just bear in mind that we are now on information age and as an IT Literate it’s a plus-plus for me compared to others who don’t. I know that knowledge and skills is not enough to be at the top. It needs sacrifices and best characteristics of a best technopreneur. Bill Gates and Steve jobs came from nothing but because of their mindset and eagerness, they reach the top of success. They always sees challenges as a opportunity to grow. We can also be like them, we have the resources (except for cash… hehehe! G-reserve pambayad sa fts!) it depends on us on how we will deal with it.

Who are exactly the Technopreneurs? Hmmmm… these are my ideas on this question of mine.

Correct me if I’m wrong..SmileSmile
Technopreneurs are:
Paradigm shifters, and innovators
• Key change catalysts and agents
• Wealth and employment creators
• Economic engine drivers
• Entrepreneurs are made and not born – entrepreneurial propensity
• You can be the entrepreneur - if you have what it
Takes like Bill Gates did.
• People who like to be their own boss like what our facilitator said.
• Necessity and opportunity entrepreneurs, meaning they are able to see opportunities in times of crisis.

Technopreneurs should have:
Innovative & Opportunistic
• Willingness to take risk
• Initiative
• Self reliance
• Perseverance (keep trying to achieve something)
• Self confidence
• Patience
• Well organized
• Desire for money
• Need for power
If ever I would reach the top of success I hope that I would be the best technopreneur in world. “Always face a challenge as an opening gateway for success!”.

3.) Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

For me, why not? It’s big break for me to take the same career path that Steve Jobs took. YOU WANNA ASK WHY??? It’s because I want to the boss of my company and it remarkable that I will be known around the globe for my achievements. It that would happen I reality, then it’s my opportunity to make a difference. Steve jobs wrote a legacy with his company, he was the creator of the evolution of modern computers until Bill Gates took it away from him. If Bill Gates didn’t successful on his plan on Apple Company maybe its Steve Jobs who will be in his position. Wrong decisions pull him down from success.
Taking the same career with Steve Jobs is the greatest challenge for me as a student.

But this time it would be different from what he have done on his company. Although he made it to be globally competitive with other competitors but in the end he end-up as a branch of Microsoft Company. In the same career with Steve Jobs, I’ll be careful on making decisions because it will make a big impact on my company’s performance. Dealing with my employees would be great if I would treat them the best that I could. I’ll treat them just like a member of a family because I know that the company’s success cannot be achieved without these people. They are the gears of the company that keeps it moving. I’ll always be in control with the company’s competiveness .And the most important to all is that I WONT HIRE RODENTS IN MY COMPANY! And I’ll do everything that Steve jobs failed to do.

Steve’s creative ideas were impressive at the young age he became a wealthy guy and so with Bill Gates. They have the mindset of great people. He is a man with a passion for excellence.
